Artist's Statement: I love working with watercolors for the spontaneous quality of the medium. Things happen between water, pigment and paper that I don't always plan for - resulting in voluntary surprises. I find this quality to be very exciting, giving a sense of adventure to my painting experience. This is what drew me to the medium and what keeps watercolor as my favorite form of artistic expression.
My subjects are drawn from the natural environment around me. As a keen observer of nature and an avid gardener, I am constantly surrounded by subject matter that proves to be a wealth of inspiration. I paint both from memory and from photographs. The photos simply serve to initiate my creative process. Once I begin planning for a painting, rather than striving for an exact likeness, I find it is the "spirit" of the subject or scene that enhances my imagination.
Sandy Long
Being a pastor's wife and raising 2 children kept Sandy Long very busy for many years. After her children went off to college and careers, she began doing oil and acrylic painting. She began painting on rocks and then moved on to real canvas.
Sandy lives in Fremont, MI with her husband Don. Three years ago they bought a home in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, spending as much time there as they can in the summer and fall. Sandy travels all over Michigan, Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming with her husband as he represents a Christian home for people with developmental disabilities. The beauty of the West as well as the UP have influenced her work. Sandy says that she really enjoys being out in God's creation and seeing His handiwork. It is only natural for her to make this the subject of her artwork. Sandy has painted rocks, painted refrigerator rock magnets, and canvas work in the market.

Nancy Lymangrover
Up Above Silk Painting
Nancy Lymangrover lives wtith her husband in Manistique where they have a cottage on Lake Michigan. They are retired educators from the Brighton, Ann Arbor area where Nancy taught first graders for more than 20 yrs. They now spend as much of the year as they can in the UP. Winter sends them to Ann Arbor, only because they would have a mile and half to plow to their house in the winter.
About 4 yrs ago Nancy discovered silk painting when she bought a silk hanging at the Hiawatha Music Festival. She spent the next couple of years teaching herself the art of silk painting. She now uses several methods to paint scarves, wall hangings and suncatchers. Scarves are painted using the Serti Method of tying, folding, pleating, and scrunching the silk, and then applying silk dye. For items that have a design, a glue-like resist is applied to the lines of the design which resist and separate the dyes. They are then painted using silk dyes, blending the colors as in a watercolor painting. Each handpainted scarf or hanging takes several steps and hours from design to setting the colors. Nancy is best known for her Trillium wall hangings. The name "Up Above Silk Painting" came from Nancy's husband saying he wanted to be "up above" rather than "down below" the Mackinac Bridge.

Terry Mills
Terry has been drawing since he was a child, when he and his twin brother would sit at the kitchen table and draw for hours. He draws his inspiration from the beautiful landscapes and scenery of the Keweenaw Peninsula and Lake Superior, and the history and variety of historical buildings in his hometown of Calumet, Michigan.
Terry is self-taught, and credits perfecting his technique of wet oil painting to internationally known artist Bob Ross, along with Dorothy Dent and Brenda Harris. He uses mostly water soluble oils on stretched triple primed canvas. Terry will have a variety of paintings on display at the market.
